Within a few years of William Penn's original grant in the 1680's, groups of Cornish settled in Pennsylvania. One of these settlers was Joseph Growden who became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the province. His son was to become Attorney General.

Francis Rawle, jr. introduced to friend Benjamin Franklin his idea of using paper currency.

Francis' son, Lawrence, served a term in the state legislature, then to become U.S. Attorney by appointment from radical George Washington. He fought against slavery. For over two hundred years this family was dedicated to public service in Pennsylvania.

In the 1700's, Peter Grubb built the first iron furnace in Lancaster County, to become the most productive iron producer in the country.
| Charles Read became mayor of Philadelphia in early 1700's. In early 1800's, Thomas Penrose designs Navy's first frigates. In mid 1800's, Charles Penrose served in the Senate, and was House Speaker for a term, then to become Solicitor of the U.S. Treasury and State Senator. Richard Esterbrook invented the steel pen. Fifty years later, it is the largest pen manufacturer in America. In 1897, Bois Penrose becomes U.S. Senator. During 1900's, Charles Penrose founded the Pennsylvania Board of Health, then to become President of Philadelphia zoo. At this time, Josiah Fox designed and constructed the original U.S. Navy. |
